CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, FL –  A powerful Canadian commercial communications satellite thundered to orbit through residual thin clouds just past midnight this morning on an upgraded and newly manufactured SpaceX Falcon 9 booster from Cape Canaveral, Florida, following the intervention of hefty thunderstorms that unexpectedly doused the Spaceport and delayed the liftoff more than an hour from just before midnight Sunday into the wee hours of Monday, September 10. Nevertheless the Falcon 9 rocket put on a spectacular sky show after the clouds cleared and the rains moved on and successfully delivered the Telstar 18v (or 18 Vantage) to its intended orbit for satellite operator Telesat headquartered in Ottawa, Canada.  

Telestar 18v will serve hordes of customers across the vast Asia-Pacific region.  

The thunderstorms delayed fueling of the rocket.

“Telesat announced today the successful launch of its new Telstar 18 VANTAGE high throughput satellite (HTS) aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket,” the company announced.

The satellite is healthy, deployed its solar arrays and began on orbit thruster maneuvers as planned to reach its designated final geostationary orbit (GEO) at an altitude of some 22,500 mi (36,000 km) above Earth.

In fact this was the second of two SpaceX launches conducted for Telesat over a time span about seven weeks apart at the Cape. The first being Telestar 19v on July 22.

“Telstar 18 VANTAGE is the latest example of how Telesat’s innovative payload designs provide our customers with the advantages they need to compete successfully in today’s satellite service markets,” said Dan Goldberg, Telesat’s President and CEO, in a statement. 

“Telstar 18 VANTAGE is a state-of-the art spacecraft that not only replaces Telstar 18, a satellite in wide use across Asia and the Pacific, but brings far greater capabilities including Ku-band mobility coverage and HTS spot beams that will allow Telesat to grow our presence in the region. We would like to thank SpaceX for the successful launch of Telstar 18 VANTAGE and for their dedication and professionalism throughout this mission.”

SpaceX engineers also recovered the Falcon 9 first stage on an ocean-going platform and eventual reuse at some point in the future.
Liftoff of the hefty 7.7 ton Telstar 18 VANTAGE high throughput telecommunications satellite (HTS) which is designed to serve the Asia Pacific region finally took place at 12:45 a.m. EDT (0445 GMT) September 10 from seaside Space launch Complex-40 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FL – some 1 hour and 17 minutes later than planned from the original pre-midnight launch time of 11:28 p.m. EDT Sunday, Sept. 9.

The new 229-foot tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 rocket rolled out Sunday afternoon to pad 40 with Telstar 18v encapsulated inside the payload fairing and was raised vertical.


Propellant loading began at T- Minus 35 minutes after verification from the SpaceX Launch Director with the liquid oxygen is chilled to about minus 340 degrees F (minus 206 degrees C).

The liquid oxygen (LOX)/RP-1 fueled Falcon 9 first stage ignited with 1.8 million pounds of liftoff thrust powered by nine Merlin 1D engines mounted in an octoweb arrangement.

The first and second stages separated 2 minutes and 33 seconds after liftoff.

The second stage ignited for the first time at 2 minutes 45 seconds followed by payload fairing deployment at 3 minutes 29 seconds. 

The rockets ascent to orbit was visible for more than 4 minutes during the climb to orbit as it arced over eastwards through thin clouds over the Atlantic Ocean towards Africa, until disappearing in the far distance behind thicker clouds near the Earth’s horizon.

Just minutes later, the Falcon 9’s first stage booster made a successful touchdown on the ocean going "Of Course I Still Love You" drone ship platform at sea - prepositioned some 400 miles (640 km) off shore in the Atlantic Ocean. 

Overall the launch window extended for four hours which enabled the launch team to wait for better weather conditions – which is exactly what happened during near ideal conditions.





The 7,060 kilograms (15,564 pounds) Telstar 18v is one of heaviest payload launched by a Falcon 9 to date.  The recently launched Telstar 19v was literally just a tad heavier by some 20 kg (35 pounds) at 7,080 kilograms (15,600 lb).

The satellite was deployed as planned from the second stage approximately 32 minutes after liftoff.  

It was delivered to a preliminary geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO).  


The launch utilized the third production unit of the upgraded Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 to fly from the Cape and the fourth overall. 

Telstar 18 VANTAGE is a Canadian owned commercial communications satellite,  designed as an advanced high throughput satellite (HTS) providing broadband services.

It will replace Telstar 18 currently on orbit.

The huge satellite was built by SSL (formerly Space Systems/Loral) for Telesat, one of the world’s leading satellite operators. 

The satellite is reported healthy by SSL and Telesat.

“SSL today announced that an advanced communications satellite it built for Telesat, a leading global satellite operator, was launched yesterday night and is successfully performing post-launch maneuvers according to plan,” said SSL in a statement. 

“The satellite, called Telstar 18 VANTAGE, deployed its solar arrays on schedule following its launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.”

Telstar 18 VANTAGE is the third high throughput satellite (HTS) in Telesat’s global fleet and the first with coverage over the Asia Pacific region. 

“Its innovative payloads will provide Telesat’s customers with a new level of performance and value to serve growing satellite broadband requirements on land, at sea and in the air,” according to Telstar.   

Telstar 18v will operate at Telesat’s 138 degrees West location, the same as the Telstar 18 satellite it is replacing. 

It will serve customers throughout the Asia Pacific region.

“Telstar 18 VANTAGE will replace and expand on the capabilities of Telesat’s Telstar 18 satellite with its extensive C-band capacity over Asia, its Ku-band HTS spot beams over Indonesia and Malaysia, and its five additional regional Ku-band beams,” said Telstar in a statement. 

“Operating from 138 degrees East, the satellite’s coverage reaches across Asia all the way to Hawaii – in both C and Ku-band – enabling direct connectivity between any point in Asia and the Americas. Its innovative Ku-band payloads of HTS spot beams and focused regional beams will provide customers operating in Southeast Asia, Mongolia, Australia & New Zealand, and the North Pacific Ocean with greater choice and flexibility to serve today’s bandwidth intensive applications.”

Telstar 18v has a 15 year design lifetime.

It Up! The Falcon 9 rocket and payload was just raised vertical this afternoon around 3 PM, with the nose cone encapsulating the Telstar 18v glistening beautifully on the afternoon sun.

Liftoff of the hefty 7.7 ton Telstar 18 VANTAGE high throughput telecommunications satellite (HTS) is targeted for the Sunday night just before midnight at 11:28 a.m. EDT (0328 GMT) Sunday, Sept. 9 on what is only the third production unit of the upgraded Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 to fly from the Cape and the fourth overall.

Tonights launch was just delayed a day by SpaceX to conduct additional tests of the rocket to ensure its readiness for flight. 

The four-hour long launch window extends until 3:28 a.m. EDT (0728 GMT) on Monday, Sept 10. The long window will help increase the prospects of a launch. But as always there are no guarantees.  

The 7,060 kilograms (15,564 pounds) Telstar 18v is one of heaviest payload launch by a Falcon 9 to date.  The recently launched Telstar 19v was literally just a tad heavier by some 20 kg, 35 pounds at 7,080 kilograms (15,600 lb).

The satellite will be deployed approximately 32 minutes after liftoff.  It will be delivered to a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO).  

SpaceX will attempt to recover the first stage on an ocean going droneship prepositioned in the Atlantic Ocean.

The path to launch was cleared on Wednesday afternoon after SpaceX engineers finally completed a successful static hot fire test of their recently upgraded Falcon 9 booster at about 10 AM.

Weather forecasters with the Air Force 45th Space Wing predict a 60 percent chance of favorable conditions during the window.  

The primary concerns are for the Thick Cloud Layer Rule and the Cumulous Cloud Rule.

The Sept 9 night launch will be only the 5th for the new Block 5 version, and the fourth from the Cape. 

The Block 5 Falcon 9 will be cheaper to produce and much easier to turnaround with minimal maintenance, says SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. His goal is to relaunch a recovered Block 5 a second time within 24 hours by sometime next year. 

SpaceX will attempt to recover this new Block 5 version of the Falcon 9 booster which replaces the older, now discontinued Block 4. 

The last Block 4 launched in late June for NASA on the Dragon CRS-15 resupply mission to the ISS.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL –  The Mobile Launcher (ML) which will be used to transport NASA’s mammoth Space Launch System (SLS) megarocket out to the launch pad, has begun its return trip from Launch Complex 39B - departing today, Sept. 7 for the iconic Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The 380 foot tall ML rolled off and left pad 39B around noon Friday and reached the outskirts of the VAB by late afternoon. 

NASA's crawler-transporter 2 (CT-2) is positioned beneath the ML and used to slowly move it between the pad and the VAB.

The ML trekked out to pad 39B on August 31 for the first time in several years.

It was a test run by the Ground systems and launch teams to check out and calibrate systems ahead of its first use with an actual SLS rocket standing vertical atop.

The ML is equipped with the crew access arm and several umbilicals that will provide power, environmental control, pneumatics, communication and electrical connections to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion spacecraft, according to NASA officials.

Exploration Ground Systems is preparing the ground systems necessary to launch SLS and the Orion deep space crew capsule on Exploration Mission-1 by 2020, and human journeys missions to the Moon and on to Mars thereafter starting with Exploration Mission-2 about 2 years later.

Pad 39B was previously used to launch NASA’s Apollo/Saturn V Moon rockets and Space Shuttles since the 1960s.

NASA’s OSIRIS-Rex Asteroid Sampler Captures 1st Glimpse of Target Bennu


On Aug. 17, 2018 NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft obtained the first images of its target asteroid Bennu from a distance of 1.4 million miles (2.2 million km), or almost six times the distance between the Earth and Moon. This cropped set of five images was obtained by the PolyCam camera over the course of an hour for calibration purposes and in order to assist the mission’s navigation team with optical navigation efforts. CAPE CANAVERAL, FL – Nearly two years after blasting off from Florida’s NASA’s OSIRIS-Rex asteroid sampling spacecraft recently captured its first glimpse of target asteroid Bennu last week and began the final approach toward its target. 

On Aug. 17, the spacecraft’s PolyCam camera obtained the images of Bennu from a distance of 1.4 million miles (2.2 million km) - almost six times the distance between the Earth and Moon.

Bennu is visible as a moving object with the stars in the constellation Serpens as background.

OSIRIS-Rex, which stands for the  Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer, has journeyed approximately 1.1 billion miles (1.8 billion km) since its Sept. 8, 2016, launch on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

OSIRIS-Rex counts as NASA’s first mission to visit a near-Earth asteroid, survey the surface, collect a sample and deliver it safely back to Earth. 

It is scheduled to arrive at Bennu in about three months on Dec. 3, 2018. 

“Now that OSIRIS-REx is close enough to observe Bennu, the mission team will spend the next few months learning as much as possible about Bennu’s size, shape, surface features, and surroundings before the spacecraft arrives at the asteroid,” said Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona, Tucson, in a statement. 

After spending so long planning for this moment, I can’t wait to see what Bennu reveals to us.”
The PolyCam images will also be used “for calibration purposes and in order to assist the mission’s navigation team with optical navigation efforts,” says NASA. 

Thus begins the probes asteroid operations phase which will include snatching samples of the asteroid for eventual return to Earth via a Sample Return Capsule in Sept. 2023.

OSIRIS-Rex science payload is comprised of is equipped with a trio of science instruments as well as a sampling arm: the OCAMS camera suite (PolyCam, MapCam, and SamCam), the OTES thermal spectrometer, the OVIRS visible and infrared spectrometer, the OLA laser altimeter, and the REXIS x-ray spectrometer.

During the mission’s approach phase, OSIRIS-REx will:

·        regularly observe the area around the asteroid to search for dust plumes and natural satellites, and study Bennu’s light and spectral properties;


·        execute a series of four asteroid approach maneuvers, beginning on Oct. 1, slowing the spacecraft to match Bennu's orbit around the Sun;


·        jettison the protective cover of the spacecraft’s sampling arm in mid-October and subsequently extend and image the arm for the first time in flight; and


·        use OCAMS to reveal the asteroid’s overall shape in late-October and begin detecting Bennu’s surface features in mid-November.


After arrival at Bennu, the spacecraft will spend the first month performing flybys of Bennu’s north pole, equator and south pole, at distances ranging between 11.8 and 4.4 miles (19 and 7 km) from the asteroid. These maneuvers will allow for the first direct measurement of Bennu’s mass as well as close-up observations of the surface. These trajectories will also provide the mission's navigation team with experience navigating near the asteroid.


“Bennu’s low gravity provides a unique challenge for the mission," said Rich Burns, OSIRIS-REx project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "At roughly 0.3 miles [500 meters] in diameter, Bennu will be the smallest object that any spacecraft has ever orbited.”


The spacecraft will extensively survey the asteroid before the mission team identifies two possible sample sites. Close examination of these sites will allow the team to pick one for sample collection, scheduled for early July 2020. After sample collection, the spacecraft will head back toward Earth before ejecting the Sample Return Capsule for landing in the Utah desert in Sept. 2023.
